Kingston birding weekend

Sat/Sun, January 26-27: A weekend spent birding Kingston’s two Islands, Amherst and Wolfe, along with some excellent inland sites. Amherst Island is experiencing one of its best birds of prey years in ages. We should expect to see a nice variety of hawks and owls over the weekend. This time last year, an adult grey morph Gyrfalcon hunted a flock of Mallards right towards us as we were on the ferry; to those on the tour that day, the sight of a massive falcon bearing down on a flock of Mallards will forever be in our memories. Will lightning strike twice? Winter finches and some surprises here and there are also possible, so we will be sure to check feeder sites carefully. The nice thing about a weekend tour is…there is no rush! We will slowly bird from site to site and enjoy some fine winter birding.

Itinerary: On Saturday, we will be birding Amherst Island from dawn until dusk; we may have some time to check Cataraqui Bay/Dupont Pond in the late afternoon before the sun sets. On Sunday, we will bird from some mainland sites in town, before heading over to Wolfe Island for a few hours. Afterwards, we will begin to bird our way east, along the St. Lawrence River, to approximately Ivy Lea.

Outing notes: Please be sure to pack snacks, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, sunscreen, windbreaker, comfortable clothing, comfortable and insulated hiking boots, and so on. Please also pack ice grippers for your footwear, if you have them. Consider dressing in layers, with your base layer being thermal clothing (keeps the chill out).

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: Please pack a field lunch for Saturday’s outing. On Saturday evening we will be enjoying a sit-down Greek meal in Kingston. We will enjoy a continental breakfast, courtesy of our hotel, on Sunday morning. Lunch on Sunday will be enjoyed at a restaurant on Wolfe Island.
