Renfrew County

Wednesday, November 15: Renfrew County has excellent birding habitat, from large lakes to fallow fields, this area is a hotspot birding area in late fall/early winter. Today we will begin our day with a visit to the Ottawa Valley Waste Facility for gulls of interest, including Glaucous, Lesser Black-backed, Iceland (kumlieni) and Thayer’s. This waste facility provides a great area to enjoy close looks at wintering gulls. Afterward, we will visit Lake Dore in search of diving ducks and loons. Rarities are possible at this time of year here so we’ll be sure to carefully sift through rafts of goldeneyes in search of a Barrow’s and scan the open waters in search of even rarer finds, such as eiders. After our visit to the lake, we will head south and cruise the beautiful open country in the surrounding area and scan the endless fallow fields and fence posts for Sandhill Cranes and birds of prey such as Northern Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk and Red-tailed Hawk, and owls such as Snowy Owl and possibly even Short-eared Owl. Two areas we will be surveying for birds of prey will be Snake River Line and Queens Line.
