Wolfe Island & Kingston area

Saturday, December 9: Today we will bird Cataraqui Bay, Belle Island and Wolfe Island in search of birds such as Snowy Owls, Tundra Swans, hawks, falcons, geese, loons, and diving ducks, and puddle ducks. A nice variety of waterfowl are likely to be observed at Cataraqui Bay and Belle Island and the various bays around the island hold massive concentrations of Aythya ducks such as Redhead and Greater Scaup. Early to mid December is a good time of year to see small rafts of Canvasback among other diving ducks. This is a great time of year to also see Tundra Swans, numbers of Common Loon, and small numbers of Red-throated Loon. Short-eared Owls, Snowy Owls and Rough-legged Hawks are our bird of prey goals during our afternoon birding Wolfe Island. Other birds of interest such as Horned Larks, Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspur will likely be seen throughout the vast agricultural expanses on the island. Rarities are possible at this time of year, with Gyrfalcon and Great Cormorant leading the way as hoped for possibilities!
