Winter Birding in Ottawa

Thursday, January 25: This morning we will bird the west end of Ottawa, birding the following sites: Richmond fields, Trail Road/Moodie Drive Quarry, Jack Pine Nature Trail and the fields near Robert Grant/Cope Drive. Targets include: Rough-legged Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Snowy Owl, Northern Shrike, Gray Partridge, Snow Bunting, Horned Lark, Lapland Longspur, white-winged gulls and more.

Outing notes: Here are some ideas of what to pack and what to wear during this field outing. Insulated winter boots and snow pants are good items to pack. Please pack some snacks, seed for birds if you wish to feed them, plenty of water, lens cloth, lip balm, sunscreen, and favoured field guides. Please dress warmly and wear layered clothing.

Activity Scale: Out of five stars, with five being a strenuous day, this trip sits at a 1 out of 5 for most birders. Very short walks throughout the day, but we will mostly be birding by car. We have one relatively short and easy walk scheduled, at Jack Pine Nature Trail.

Meet at the Tim Horton’s in Richmond at 9:30 AM.

Method of payment: Cash or cheque the morning of the tour. If paying by cheque, please make the cheque out to ‘Jon Ruddy’
