Sunday, April 8: Eastern Ontario floodplains are in prime condition to attract hundreds of thousands of migrant geese. This outing is a Wild Goose Chase, where we will be endeavouring to see massive numbers of migrant geese. We will search for Greater Snow Geese, Ross’s Geese, Canada Geese, Cackling Geese, and Greater White-fronted Geese east of Ottawa. The ID of rarer geese in particular, such as Ross’s and Greater White-fronted, will be discussed at length in the field. DISCLAIMER: I wanted to make it clear ahead of time that this tour may not be for everyone! We will be scanning through massive flocks of geese all morning. It may be quite chilly and quite windy. Please consider whether this type of birding is of interest to you. Alternatively, if you enjoy goose study and scanning through thousands upon thousands of geese, then this is the tour for you.
Outing notes: Here are some ideas of what to pack and what to wear during this field outing. Waterproof footwear is recommended, and rain jacket/rain pants are also useful items to have on-hand during spring birding outings. Please pack some snacks, plenty of water, lens cloth, lip balm, sunscreen, and favoured field guides.
Lunch & Dinner: Please pack your own snacks and field lunch today.
Activity Scale: This trip sits at a 1/5. We will be birding almost exclusively by car this morning.
