Prince Edward County

Friday, March 23: A day spent birding the southern edge of Prince Edward County, from Kaiser Crossroad to the E to Wellington to the W. We will search for an excellent variety of migrant waterfowl species, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Long-eared Owl, American Woodcock, Killdeer, Eastern Meadowlark, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Eastern Bluebird, Great Blue Heron, Red-shouldered Hawk, Golden Eagle, Northern Goshawk, massive numbers of Dark-eyed Juncos and American Robin, Hermit Thrush, and so on! Spring migration is in full swing and the ‘county is one of the best, if not the best, migration hot spots in all of eastern Ontario.

Outing notes: Here are some ideas of what to pack and what to wear during this field outing. Waterproof footwear is recommended, and rain jacket/rain pants are also good items to have on-hand during spring birding outings. Pack rubber boots as well, as the trails may be quite wet at this time. Please pack some snacks, plenty of water, lens cloth, lip balm, sunscreen, and favoured field guides.

Activity Scale: Out of five stars, with five being a strenuous day, this trip sits at a 2.5 out of 5 for most birders. Very short walks throughout the day, but we will mostly be birding by car. We have one, slightly longer walk scheduled (2-2.5 km)

Lunch & Dinner: Please pack a field lunch for today’s outing. For those spending the night in Napanee and birding Amherst Island the following day, we will enjoy a sit-down meal on Friday evening.

Accommodations: We will be staying at the Fox Motor Inn in Napanee. This location is only a 20-minute drive from the Millhaven Ferry the following morning. It has great reviews online: https://www.foxmotorinn.com/reservationv1.html

Meet: For those interested in carpooling, we will carpool from Ottawa. For those interested in meeting at our first meeting point, please meet us at the Adolphustown ferry terminal between 9:00 and 9:15 AM:  https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Glenora+Ferry+-+Adulphustown+Dock/@44.0482527,-77.051402,18.26z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x89d7cf29af892089:0xdb2baca2cb298bdb!2sAdolphustown,+ON+-+Glenora,+ON,+Greater+Napanee,+ON!3b1!8m2!3d44.0481929!4d-77.0503928!3m4!1s0x89d7cf260bc25893:0x90aea5d909c2da31!8m2!3d44.0481625!4d-77.050952
