Presqu’ile & Prince Edward County

Saturday, March 24: Today we will be birding  Presqu’ile Provincial Park as well as the southwestern and western edge of Prince Edward County. Some of the sites we will be visiting in the ‘county include North Beach, Pleasant Bay, Wellington Beach, West Lake, East Lake and Salmon Point. At this time of year, waterfowl migration is in full swing, and these sites are two of the best waterfowl sites in all of eastern ON. We will keep our eyes peeled for migrants of all kinds, as well as for rarities, such as Gyrfalcon! Gyrfalcon and Peregrine Falcon, as well as Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Northern Goshawk and Snowy Owl view these sorts of waterfowl concentration points differently to birders; they see them as buffet tables.

Outing notes: Here are some ideas of what to pack and what to wear during this field outing. Waterproof footwear is recommended, and rain jacket/rain pants are also useful items to have on-hand during spring birding outings. Pack rubber boots as well, as the trails may be quite wet at this time. Please pack some snacks, plenty of water, lens cloth, lip balm, sunscreen, and favoured field guides.

Activity Scale: Out of five stars, with five being a strenuous day, this trip sits at a 2.5 out of 5 for most birders. Very short walks throughout the day, but we will mostly be birding by car. We have one, slightly longer walk scheduled (2-2.5 km)

Lunch & Dinner: Please pack a field lunch for today’s outing. For those spending the night in Napanee and birding Amherst Island the following day, we will enjoy a sit-down meal at the Waterfront River Pub & Terrace in Napanee:

Accommodations: On Saturday night, we will be staying at the Fox Motor Inn in Napanee. This location is only a 20-minute drive from the Millhaven Ferry the following morning. It has great reviews online:
