Wednesday, November 28: A half-day birding outing enjoying gulls and waterfowl in Renfrew County. We will first visit the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Facility to study, age and classify gulls. The Iceland Gull complex (Kumlien’s and Thayer’s), Glaucous Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull and more should be present at the site. There are often hundreds of Herring Gulls, of all ages, present, as well. After a few hours (2-2.5 hours) of studying gulls, it’s off to Lake Dore, where we will scan the waters for waterbirds of all kinds. We will finish the outing with a few stops at Muskrat Lake. Please be sure to pack your scope if you have one!
Outing notes: Please be sure to pack snacks, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, electrolyte mix, sunscreen, windbreaker, layered clothing, comfortable and insulated hiking shoes, and so on. Consider wearing a thermal underlayer. It’s a good idea to pack winter gloves, a scarf/neck warmer and a toque, as well. I will pack extra ‘winter gear’ in case it’s needed.
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: I am happy to organize a sit-down lunch at the Country Valley Kitchen, in Cobden.
