Algonquin Park

Sat/Sun, January 5-6: Start your New Year’s bird species list off with a weekend birding trip to Algonquin Provincial Park! We will meet at the East Gate entrance to the park on Saturday afternoon and bird until sundown. On Saturday evening, we’re off to enjoy a hearty meal at the Mad Trapper restaurant. While at the restaurant, we will go over finch call notes as we prepare for the following morning. New this year, we will head to the park early on Sunday morning and experience dawn flyovers. This is a great way for us to find some of our finch targets and will be a fun learning exercise as a group. Our boreal targets include Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Red Crossbill, White-winged Crossbill, Pine Siskin, Common Redpoll, Hoary Redpoll, Evening Grosbeak, Pine Grosbeak and Black-backed Woodpecker. I am happy to announce that the Winter of 2019 will be a good winter for seeing boreal finches. Please see Ron Pittaway’s Finch Forecast for further details.

Outing notes: Please be sure to pack snacks, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, sunscreen, windbreaker, comfortable clothing, comfortable and insulated hiking boots, and so on. Please also pack ice grippers for your footwear, if you have them. Consider dressing in layers, with your base layer being thermal clothing (keeps the chill out). Please pack your Ontario Parks pass if you have one. For those purchasing a day pass, the cost is approximately $15.00.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: On Sunday morning I am happy to prepare the group with a hot oatmeal breakfast. I will have several types of oatmeal and will pack a variety of fruit and nut toppings. We will enjoy a sit-down lunch at the Visitor’s Centre. Please note that you must purchase your lunch if you’re using the cafeteria’s facilities.
