Winter birding in Ottawa

Wednesday, January 30: A morning spent birding various locales throughout Ottawa in search of wintering birds. We will visit Trail Road/Moodie Drive Quarry to look for hawks, gulls and sparrows then head to Shirleys Bay/Hilda Road feeders to look for woodpeckers and redpolls, among others. Next up, it’s off to Britannia Point, where we will hopefully spot one of the continuing Gyrfalcons resting on the ice. Our last stop of the day will be Bate Island, where goldeneyes and other ducks will be searched for.

Outing notes: Please be sure to pack snacks, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, sunscreen, windbreaker, comfortable clothing, comfortable and insulated hiking boots, and so on. Please also pack ice grippers for your footwear, if you have them. Consider dressing in layers, with your base layer being thermal clothing (keeps the chill out).

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: I will schedule in a short stop at either Tim Hortons or McDonald’s for coffee, snacks and a washroom break.
