The Breeding Birds of Renfrew County

Saturday, June 1: A full day exploring beautiful, bird-rich Renfrew County! Today, we will bird throughout a multitude of birding habitats in search of Renfrew County’s breeding birds. We will search for sparrows such as Grasshopper, Clay-colored and Vesper,  and warblers such as Golden-winged, Mourning and Chestnut-sided. Grassland birds such as Upland Sandpiper, Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark are also on our targets list for the day.  Both Willow and Alder Flycatchers are likely to be seen and heard today; we will investigate the different habitat requirements of these species as we seek to observe them. As we enter boreal habitat, we should expect to see and hear a very special and sought-after eastern Ontario breeder: the Olive-sided Flycatcher. While birding in boreal habitat, a nice variety of thrushes are possible, including Veery, Hermit Thrush and Swainson’s Thrush. Given the full range of habitats in which we will be birding, it is likely that we may rack up a high tally of species today. I’m already looking forward to this trip 🙂

Outing notes: Dress light and seasonal, and consider wearing quick-dry clothing, as well. Please consider packing rubber boots and rainwear, extra socks, insect repellent, mosquito head net/jacket, plenty of water, electrolyte mix (I will supply this, as well), coffee/tea, nutritious snacks, and sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast for the region in which we will be birding to help you decide on what to wear for the trip!
