Carden Alvar Provincial Park

Sat/Sun, June 15-16: Join Jon Ruddy of Eastern Ontario Birding on a two-day birding “vacation” to the famed Carden Alvar Provincial Park! This provincial park boasts some remarkably high species richness, with many Species at Risk occurring within its grounds. Some of the many lovely bird species we will endeavour to see, hear and enjoy are: Loggerhead Shrike, Sedge Wren, Upland Sandpiper, Least Bittern, American Bittern, Virginia Rail, Golden-winged Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Clay-colored Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Eastern Towhee, Bobolink, Eastern Meadowlark, Eastern Bluebird, Common Nighthawk, Eastern Whip-poor-will, Wilson’s Snipe, American Woodcock and much more. We will enjoy a full day of exploring the park on Saturday, stopping for photography and bird study every chance we get. On Saturday evening, after a hearty group dinner, we will head back to the park and listen for the enchanting night calls of herons, shorebirds, Whip-poor-wills and nighthawks (hopefully it will also be a starry night). On Sunday, we will continue to bird and explore areas of the park, then make our way south, to some exciting additional birding sites. Very much looking forward to this trip!

Outing notes: Dress light and seasonal, and consider wearing quick-dry clothing, as well. Please consider packing rubber boots and rainwear, extra socks, insect repellent, mosquito head net/jacket, plenty of water, electrolyte mix (I will supply this, as well), coffee/tea, nutritious snacks, and sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast for the region in which we will be birding to help you decide on what to wear for the trip!

Brief itinerary: Friday is our travel day. We will bird Carden Alvar Provincial Park all of Saturday, including nighttime birding for nocturnal birds after our group dinner. On Sunday, we will bird the park in the morning, then begin to birdwatch our way south, to other birding sites.

Trip Itinerary: The itinerary for this tour is available by email request.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: Details TBD closer to the date of the tour.

Activity Scale: 2/5. For a description of the Activity Scale, please click here.

Accommodations: We will be staying in Orillia for two nights; Friday and Saturday. There are many hotel and motel options in Orillia, as well as a good selection of Bed & Breakfasts. From my POV as a trip leader, it’s not imperative that we stay at the same hotel/motel, so long as we as a group meet at a common destination each morning before heading off for the day. I would like for clients to select the accommodation which suits their needs best. All I require is, at your earliest convenience, please let me know where you have decided on staying 🙂
