Amherst Island & Kingston

Saturday, October 6th

9:00 AM – 5:15 PM

Excellent birding on Amherst Island today! Over 30 Northern Harriers, a single Short-eared Owl, a single SNOWY Owl (summering bird?), a single juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk perched roadside and all sorts of other birds! Meadow voles were absolutely everywhere. This is shaping up to be a great winter for Red-tailed Hawks, Rough-legged Hawks, Short-eared Owls, Long-eared Owls, Northern Saw-whet Owls…and even more. Each cold front from here on in will bring birds of prey to the island; the abundance of food should keep them happy for the fall…perhaps even the winter! Very exciting winter shaping up for us here in eastern ON, with birds of prey on Amherst, and widespread winter finches.
