Amherst Island

Again, great birding on Amherst Island! We saw numerous birds of prey, including nearly 30 Red-tailed Hawks! Rough-legged’s were also showing well; their numbers are likely to build over the coming month. We observed five American Kestrels, as well. The surprise of the day was a “Southern” (exilipes) Hoary Redpoll in a flock of only four Common Redpolls! The redpolls were foraging in what appeared to be goldenrod right next to the side of the road. We couldn’t quite snap a pic and before we knew it, they flew off. While birding along Front Road, we noticed swans in a calm bay. When we stepped out of our car, we could hear the far-carrying yodels of Tundra Swans! They were quite vocal, all 49 of them.
