Winter birding in Ottawa

Saturday, February 9: A half-day winter birding trip, birding various locales throughout Ottawa in search of exciting wintering birds. We will visit Trail Road/Moodie Drive Quarry to look for hawks, gulls and sparrows then head to Shirleys Bay/Hilda Road feeders to look for woodpeckers, waxwings and redpolls, among others. Next up, we’re off to Britannia Point, where we will hopefully spot one of the continuing Gyrfalcons resting on the ice. Additionally, we will sift through the roosting ducks in search of rarer diamonds in the Mallard rough. We are then on to Bate Island, where goldeneyes and other ducks will be searched for.

Outing notes: Please be sure to pack snacks, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, sunscreen, windbreaker, comfortable clothing, comfortable and insulated hiking boots, and so on. Please also pack ice grippers for your footwear, if you have them. Consider dressing in layers, with your base layer thermal (keeps the chill out).
