Renfrew County Gulls & Waterfowl

Wednesday, November 28th

9:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Renfrew’s lakes are just barely hanging on after the early deep freeze! Lake Madawaska in Arnprior is wide open; Muskrat Lake is largely open; but, critically for gulls, Lake Dore is nearly completely frozen over. Thankfully, many gulls are still present at the nearby dump, and today, they were providing excellent views (as they often are!) We observed the two “white-wingers” (Glaucous and Iceland) in nice and close and managed some nice photos of both. The surprise of the day came right at the end when we observed a Greater Common Redpoll among a flock of approx. 100 Southern Common Redpolls. In short, Greater’s are bigger and browner than their Southern counterpart and have a noticeably stouter bill. Another enjoyable and meaningful day in the field. The window to “good” birding is narrowing, it must be said, but what a year it has been! Details below…
