Presqu’ile Park to Gananoque

Sat/Sun March 23-24: The first taste of spring is in the air! Spring migrants are pouring in, as lingering wintering birds remain in large numbers. Thousands upon thousands of birds abound, and the species diversity in eastern Ontario is picking up by the day. One of the highlights at Presqu’ile Provincial Park at this time of year is the superb collection of waterfowl roosting and foraging in Presqu’ile Bay. Feeding and roosting in the thousands, Greater Scaup and Redhead, along with hundreds of Canvasback, will be seen in Presqu’ile Bay. We will be taking our time, admiring waterfowl, so be sure to bring your waterfowl-related field guides with you today to help in your enjoyment and study.  From Presqu’ile, we’ll be making our way to Barcovan Beach, Twelve O’Clock Point, Consecon and then on to North Beach Provincial Park. Afterwards, we will head to Wellington Harbour, then wrap our day up by birding our way northeast from there, to Napanee. We will stop for any birds of interest along the way, of course! On Sunday we will make our way to Amherst Island, where we will bird for three-quarters of our day. We will walk to Owl Woods, as well as drive the open country in search of Owls and Hawks. After our stint on Amherst, we’ll make our way to Kingston where we’ll either bird Cataraqui Bay/Invista Lagoon or some sites along Kingston’s Inner Harbour. Time-pending, we may check out the waterfowl scene at Ivy Lea, along the St. Lawrence River, as we head back home.

Outing notes: Dress in seasonal and comfortable clothing, and consider wearing layers, as well. Please consider packing winter and/or rubber boots, windbreaker, rainwear, ice grippers (if you own them), hand & foot warmers, extra socks, coffee/tea, snacks, water, and sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast for the region in which we will be birding to help you decide on what to wear for the trip! Please note that for non-Ontario Parks pass holders, it costs approximately $15.00 to enter the park.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: For the Saturday day trip, please pack a field lunch. On Saturday evening, we will enjoy a sit-down meal at The Waterfront Pub & Terrace in Napanee. On Sunday morning, we will enjoy a hearty country breakfast across the street from our motel. While birding on Amherst Island, it’s best that we pack and eat a field lunch. We could arrange a quick group grocery shop/or drop by a Tim Hortons etc. in Napanee on Sunday morning to pick up our basic field lunches. More on this at a later time 🙂

Activity Scale: 2/5. For a description of the Activity Scale, please click here.

Accommodations: For this tour, we will be staying at the Fox Motor Inn in Napanee. I recommend requesting a room on the second floor (i.e. a “quiet” room); this means you’ll be staying in their newest facilities, which, in my opinion, are top-of-class in the motel division.

Meet at the front gate registry to Presqu’ile Provincial Park at 9:30 AM on Saturday morning.

Carpooling: Carpooling in the lead vehicle is available upon request. Additionally, I am happy to make carpooling arrangements for you.

Method of payment: Cash, e-Transfer or cheque the morning of the tour. If paying by e-Transfer, please use as the recipient address; if paying by cheque, you can make it out to Eastern Ontario Birding.

Cost: $150.00 (HST-included)

Duration: Two 8-hour days of birding
