Saturday, April 20: Today we will enjoy some superb spring birding at one of eastern Ontario’s top birding locales; Amherst Island! A great collection of birds should be seen today, including birds of prey such as hawks, eagles, Snowy and Short-eared owls and Northern Shrike. Tundra Swans will have returned, as will have large numbers of Bonaparte’s Gulls. Diving Caspian Terns, and winter and migrant waterfowl will also likely be observed. Additional springtime highlights include both Horned and Red-necked grebes, Virginia Rails, multiple sparrow species, up to four-to-five species of swallow, both Golden and Ruby-crowned kinglets, both Pine and Yellow-rumped warblers, Hermit Thrush, Brown Thrasher, and Rusty Blackbird. We will be birding mostly by vehicle today, but we’ll also be birding by foot, at Sand Bay Conservation Area, as well as some of Martin Edwards Reserve.
Outing notes: Dress in seasonal and comfortable clothing, and consider wearing layers, as well. Please consider packing rubber boots (preferably an insulated pair), windbreaker, rainwear, extra socks, coffee/tea, snacks, water, and sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast for the region in which we will be birding to help you decide on what to wear for the trip!
Lunch & Dinner: For today’s tour, please pack a field lunch. I am open to organizing a sit-down meal after the tour; this is something we can chat about during the tour itself 🙂
