Weather: Great winter-birding weather. Daytime high of -8 Celsius (-12 Celsius with windchill). Mostly sunny, with light clouds. Light SW wind (<15 km/h) throughout the day.
What a beautiful winter birding day on Amherst Island. Weather conditions were quite good throughout the day, meaning birds of prey were visible and active throughout the day, but especially so during the afternoon. We observed five species of owl (an EOB first during a tour!), many hawks, a dozen Bald Eagles and a very rare winter bird to eastern ON in the form of a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. To provide some perspective as to how rare they are, wintertime Red-shouldered’s are more unusual to see than Gyrfalcons in eastern ON!
