Island birding in Kingston

Saturday, January 25: Today we will be birding Amherst and Wolfe islands in search of a wide assortment of Birds of Prey! We will begin our day by birding Amherst Island before moving on to Wolfe Island later in the afternoon, to take in late-aft and dusk birding in search of owls-on-the-hunt! This trip will feature a hike in Owl Woods, where we will search for roosting Northern Saw-whet Owls, Long-eared Owls and Barred Owls, among others. In the open fields, we may encounter Snowy Owls, Rough-legged Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, Northern Harriers, Bald Eagles and more. At dusk, we will search for Short-eared Owls as they liven from the roost sites and begin to hunt mice and voles!

Outing notes:  It’s a good idea to check the weather forecast for the region in which we will be birding to help you decide on what to wear for the trip. Check “Bath” the day before, for the latest weather update. Please be sure to pack gloves and a toque, snacks, hand and foot warmers, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, sunscreen, and please wear winter boots.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: Please pack a cooler full of food and drink today. We will enjoy our field lunch while birding on Amherst Island.
