Sat/Sun, February 15-16: Ever wanted to see and photograph Long-tailed Ducks, Buffleheads, Redheads, Canvasbacks, King Eider and all three species of scoter (especially Surf Scoter)…right…up…close? Well, each winter, these species of waterfowl (and many more) spend their winters on the open waters of western Lake Ontario. From Bronte to Stoney Creek, tens of thousands of ducks can be seen…often right by shore. These sites are also the winter homes of many Iceland Gulls (both Kumlien’s and Thayer’s); Toronto Harbour is the best place in Ontario to see these gulls up close. Undoubtedly, surprises are possible throughout the weekend, such as Eared Grebe or even Gyrfalcon. This weekend tour will be slow-paced and is most suitable to birders with a strong interest in studying birds, counting birds and most importantly, bird photography!
Itinerary: We will be leaving Ottawa at 8:00 AM on Saturday morning. Several pit stops later, we will birdwatch in the afternoon, from lakeshore sites east of Toronto through to Mississauga until sundown. We will begin our day early on Sunday, after our continental breakfast, finishing up the tour around 4:30-5 PM.
Outing notes: It’s a good idea to check the weather forecast for the region in which we will be birding to help you decide on what to wear for the trip. Check “Toronto” the day before, for the latest weather update. Please be sure to pack gloves and a toque, snacks, hand and foot warmers, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, sunscreen, and please wear winter boots.
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: Please pack a cooler full of food and drink for Saturday’s instalment. We will enjoy a sit-down meal on Saturday evening. Breakfast on Sunday is courtesy of our hotel, followed by a simple, sit-down lunch midday, at a local establishment!
