Northern Outaouais

Saturday, February 22: Today, we will be exploring beautifully rugged countryside, as well as a lovely suite of birding sites, throughout central Outaouais, in Quebec. We will be driving north to Kiamika, QC, which is approximately 2hrs15min straight north of Gatineau. This means, for Ontario birders, that we will be nearly equalatitudinal to Temiskaming, ON! We will search for a wide-array of bird species, from Snow Buntings in open farmland settings, to Golden Eagles perched in towering pines, to Black-backed and even American Three-toed Woodpeckers foraging on spruces and tamaracs. Winter finches will be encountered throughout the day, perhaps in some cases collecting grit from roadsides. Northern birds of prey, such as Northern Goshawk, Northern Hawk Owl and Great Gray Owl might also be encountered by carefully cruising roads throughout their suitable hunting and wintering habitat!

Outing notes: Please be sure to check the weather forecast for Kiamika, Quebec several days out from the trip to help in your decision about what clothing to wear. Please be sure to pack gloves and a toque, snacks, hand and foot warmers, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, sunscreen, and please wear winter boots.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: We will enjoy a sit-down lunch at a local establishment. As for dinner, you’re more than welcome to drop by for a bite after the tour! Pizzas will be ordered and delivered.
