Amherst Island

Sunday, November 21: A visit to Amherst Island in the fall always produces neat sightings. We will search for numerous species of Birds of Prey including Red-tailed Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Merlin, Bald Eagle and so on. In the afternoon, we will search for both Snowy Owls and Short-eared Owls until sundown; both species are typically afternoon-active on the island, and both species should be present in numbers by this date. Ducks, swans, loons and grebes will be present in nice numbers in every bay on the island, and we’ll be sure to scan for them with our binoculars and scopes. We will be walking a portion of Martin Edwards Reserve, along with some concession roads, but will mostly be cruising the roads in search of birds!

What to pack: Please dress for the season, and be sure to take a look at the forecast for the region in which we will be birding a few days out from the tour. Please pack a cooler with the food and drink of your choice. Pack your optical and photographic equipment, as well as your field guides should you wish to consult them during the tour.  Although they are not mandatory, I recommend packing a mask for whenever we might be birding in tight spaces.

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists when I arrive home. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: I will do my best to schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes. However, clients can, at any time, use the great outdoors as a rest stop, too!

Meet-up time and location: 9:00 a.m. at the Millhaven Ferry Terminal to take the 9:30 a.m. ferry over to Amherst Island. The fee for the ferry ride is $10.00; you must pay with cash. We will be taking the 6:00 p.m. ferry back to the mainland, lining up at 5:30 p.m.

Duration: 9 hours.

Cost: $150 per person (HST-included). I do not have a preference when it comes to payment type; I accept e-transfer, cash and cheque.
