Sunday, November 27: Today, we will search for Purple Sandpipers and Winter Waterfowl at Presqu’ile Provincial Park. Purple Sandpipers are annual at this time of year at Presqu’ile; we will endeavour to find some as they forage on algal mats off Owen Point. A lovely variety of ducks should be present at Presqu’ile at this time of year, along with an array of other winter bird groups. Snowy Owls, large falcons, hawks, Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs and more could very well be present! Depending on local bird reports closer to the date of the tour, we may also bird outside the park grounds, should concentrations of waterfowl and other birds of interest be present.
What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season, and be sure to take a look at the forecast for the region in which we will be birding a few days out from the tour. Make sure to pack and wear insulated rubber boots for the walk over to Gull Island. Pack an extra set of socks and an extra set of shoes should it be raining/snowing. Please pack a cooler with the food and drink of your choice. Pack your binoculars and photographic equipment, as well as your spotting scope, if you have one. Please note that an Ontario Parks day pass is NOT required for this tour.
eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists when I arrive home. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.
Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 min throughout the day.
