Sandbanks Provincial Park

Friday, December 2: This morning, we will explore Sandbanks Provincial Park, and both East and West lakes, in search of winter residents and lingering migrants. Species such as Little Gull, Black Vulture, King Eider, Purple Sandpiper, Red-throated Loon, Golden Eagle, Lapland Longspur will be searched for. Even rarer birds, such as Townsend’s Solitaire and Mountain Bluebird will be on the “watch-for” list, as well. Early December, during a mild winter, can be surprisingly birdy in the County. We will set about our course for the day and ID everything that comes across our path 🙂

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season, and be sure to take a look at the forecast for the region in which we will be birding a few days out from the tour. Please pack a cooler with the food and drink of your choice. Pack your optical and photographic equipment, as well as your field guides should you wish to consult them during the tour. Please pack your spotting scope, if you have one. An Ontario Parks pass is NOT required for this tour.

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists when I arrive home. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: Sandbanks Provincial Park’s facilities are closed at this time (including outhouses, I believe). Clients must be comfortable using the Great Outdoors for their washroom break.

Activity rating: 2/5. We will be walking throughout the tour, with short drives to and from sites.

Meet-up time and location: 8:30 a.m. at Sandbanks Provincial Park registration/main entrance parking area.

Duration: 4.5 hours. The tour will be wrapped up by 1:00 p.m.

Cost: $90 per person (HST-included). I do not have a preference when it comes to payment type; I accept e-transfer, cash and cheque.
