Wednesday, June 21: Midsummer and its many riches…we’ll savour them as we explore some unique habitats, in search of unique birds and other wildlife! We’ll seek out warblers, vireos, flycatchers, cuckoos, swallows, sparrows, thrushes, hawks, and whatever else may cross our path! Insects, reptiles, amphibians, plants, fungi and more will also be searched for and admired as we explore beautiful landscapes.
Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, I’m afraid. The good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” Each day in the field is a treat to savour!
What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season and be sure to check on the weather conditions ahead of the tour. As this will be an exploratory tour, you can pack your field guides to plants, trees, insects, birds, reptiles & amphibians, fungi, lichen, etc, and we will consult the guidebooks after the tour. I will also pack my guidebooks! I recommend packing water and snacks in a backpack, and bringing it with you for the the hike. We will enjoy a tailgate field lunch during the tour, so please pack a cooler, which you can leave in your vehicle. If it’s sunny for the hike, I recommend wearing a hat in order to protect from the heat of the radiating sunlight. I also recommend using insect repellent, sunscreen, and wearing long pants.
eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists when I arrive home. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.
Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 min. However, given that we’ll be out hiking here and there, the Great Outdoors will likely be your best option!
Activity rating: 2/5. Some hiking throughout hilly countryside. Some of the walking will be on level terrain. We will also conduct some birding from roadsides.
Meet-up time and location: 8:30 a.m. at the Shell Gas Station located off Highway 7, at Kaladar. Address: 10201 Hwy 41, Kaladar, ON K0H 1Z0.
Duration: The tour will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end around 4:30 – 5:00 p.m. I will schedule in a 45min lunch break, as well as several snack/water breaks throughout the day.
Cost: $180 per person (HST-included). I accept e-transfer, cash and cheque.
