Saturday, September 2: Today, we will enjoy peak fall migration at one of eastern Ontario’s best birding sites: Presqu’ile Provincial Park. Peak numbers of southbound shorebirds and songbirds are typically encountered during late August. We will search for shorebirds along the beaches, and sift through large flocks of songbirds in field and forest. Species’ diversity is very high at this time of year, and we’re likely to see a lovely array of migrants today. Typically, the day-trip species total is between 80-100 species of birds during peak fall birding tours at Presqu’ile Provincial Park. I’m looking forward to getting out there with you and seeing what the day brings!
Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, I’m afraid. The good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” Each day in the field is a treat to savour!
What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season and be sure to check on the weather conditions ahead of the tour. I recommend packing plenty of liquids, snacks and also a field lunch, which we will enjoy at a picnic area. If it’s sunny on tour day, I recommend wearing a hat in order to protect from the heat of the radiating sunlight. I also recommend packing insect repellent and sunscreen. Please note that an Ontario Parks Daily Vehicle Permit (DVP) is required for this tour. You must register using Ontario Parks’ online registration form.
eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists when I arrive home. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.
Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 min throughout the day.
Activity rating: 2/5. We will be hiking a total of approx. 5-6 km total throughout the day.
Meet-up time and location: 9:00 a.m. at the Presqu’ile Provincial Park park store parking lot.
Duration: Approximately 8 hours, with several snack and water breaks and a 45 minute lunch break included.
Cost: $160 per person (HST-included). I do not have a preference when it comes to payment type; I accept e-transfer, cash and cheque.
