Fall birds & colours at Algonquin Park

Saturday, September 30: Today, we will visit world famous Algonquin Provincial Park in search of boreal birds and mammals! We happen to be visiting at a time when fall colours are entering their prime, so, expect some beautiful fall backdrops throughout the day. On the bird front, we will search for Black-backed Woodpecker, Canada Jay, Boreal Chickadee, finches, late-season warblers, American Pipits, Horned Larks, thrushes, hawks, falcons, ducks, loons and more! On the mammal front, we will keep our eyes peeled for moose, pine marten, river otter, red fox, beaver and muskrat. Who knows what the day may bring 🙂

Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, but the good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I will endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” 🙂

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season and be sure to check on the weather conditions ahead of the tour. I recommend packing a cooler with your lunch, snacks and liquids. A cafeteria lunch is likely also available at the Visitor Centre, but the cafeteria is not always open when we visit in the fall. If it’s sunny on tour day, I recommend wearing a hat in order to protect from the heat of the radiating sunlight. I also recommend packing insect repellent and sunscreen. Please note that an Ontario Parks Daily Vehicle Permit (DVP) is required for this tour. You must register using Ontario Parks’ online registration form.

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists after the tour. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes, when possible. Clients may also use the great outdoors whenever we happen to be birding along quieter paths.

Activity rating: 2-3/5. We will be walking approximately 6-8 km during today’s tour.

Meet-up time and location: 8:30 a.m. at the East Gate entrance to Algonquin Provincial Park.

End location: We will be ending the day at Mizzy Lake Trail along Arowhon Road (this is located at approximately km 16 off Highway 60).

Duration: 8 hours.

Cost: $170 per person (HST-included). I accept payment via e-transfer to eontbird@gmail.com. I also accept mailed cheques sent to Eastern Ontario Birding, 751 Namur Street, Embrun Ontario, K0A 1W0.

Payment due date: Upon registration. Your registration is only secure once payment is received. Please be sure to review my Cancellation Policy ahead of signing up for this tour.
