Gull Island @ Presqu’ile Provincial Park

Monday, September 18: Today, we will walk from Owen Point to Gull Island and scour the island in search of shorebirds, ducks, grebes, gulls, terns, warblers, sparrows, flycatchers, vireos, wrens and much more. After our morning walk on Gull Island, we will have a field lunch, and then continue on with our birding as we search Presqu’ile’s beach (panne) settings for birds. This tour happens to also coincide with monarch butterfly migration and bloom season for many interesting plants! We are in for an exciting day 🙂

Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, but the good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I will endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” 🙂

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season and be sure to check on the weather conditions ahead of the tour. For our walk to Gull Island, I recommend wearing sturdy water shoes with good grip (vs. crocs); old running shoes/hiking shoes work, as do hiking sandals and so on. Please pack a cooler with your lunch, snacks, liquids and so on. We will have a sit down picnic lunch after our morning walk to and from Gull Island. If it’s sunny on tour day, I recommend wearing a hat in order to protect from the heat of the radiating sunlight. I also recommend packing insect repellent and sunscreen. Please note that a provincial park day pass is required for today’s tour. You must use Ontario Parks’ online registration system to pre-book ahead of your visit, even if you have a seasonal park pass.

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists after the tour. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: During the morning walk to and from Gull Island, the great outdoors will provide for our only washroom break option. Afterwards, we will have access to the parks’ bathroom stations.

Activity rating: 2/5. We will be walking 5-6 km throughout today’s tour.

Meet-up time and location: 9:00 a.m. at the park store at Presqu’ile Provincial Park. Please check in at the front registration office and then drive to the park store parking area (this is just past Owen Point parking lot).
