Sunday, November 12: Today, we will be birding of one eastern Ontario’s top fall birding sites: Presqu’ile Provincial Park. The timing of our visit coincides with the fall migration of Purple Sandpipers, Dunlin, White-rumped Sandpipers, sea ducks, bay ducks, swans, loons, grebes, hawks, eagles, Peregrine Falcon and more. Late migrant/lingering songbirds are also possible today, such as warblers, vireos, wrens and more. We will carefully search Gull Island for our target species, among many other bird species, and also birdwatch the beach area and nearby trails.
Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, but the good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I will endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” 🙂
What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season and be sure to check on the weather conditions ahead of the tour. Please pack rubber boots, as we will be walking from Owen Point to Gull Island; the water depth ranges from a few inches to over a foot (depending on the year); you may also choose to wear hip waders, but I don’t believe those will be necessary. I will have more detailed info on water depth closer to the date of the tour. Please pack your photographical and optical equipment of your choice; if you have a spotting scope, pack it, as well. Please pack a full lunch, which you can leave in your vehicle. I recommend packing liquids and snacks. If it’s sunny on tour day, I recommend wearing a hat in order to protect from the heat of the radiating sunlight. Please note that an Ontario Parks Daily Vehicle Permit is also required for this tour. You must register your vehicle using Ontario Parks’ online registration system.
eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists after the tour. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.
Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes.
Activity rating: 2-3/5. We will be walking a total of 5-7 km. during today’s tour, including walking from Owen Point to Gull Island (the passage is approx. 300 meters).
