Purple Sandpipers & other late fall migrants at Presqu’ile Provincial Park

Sunday, November 24: Today, we will be birding of one eastern Ontario’s top fall birding sites: Presqu’ile Provincial Park. The timing of our visit coincides with the fall migration of Purple Sandpipers, sea ducks, bay ducks, loons, grebes, eagles and more. Given the date, we will also keep an eye out for Snowy Owl and/or large falcons, such as Peregrine and even a Gyrfalcon! We will carefully search Gull Island for our target species, among many other bird species, and also birdwatch the beach area before hitting the road back home.

Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, but the good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I will endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” 🙂

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season and be sure to check on the weather conditions ahead of the tour. Check back closer to the date of the tour for information on how deep the water is from Owen Point to Gull Island; some years, rubber boots are fine to use, whereas others years, hip waders are required. Please pack your photographical and optical equipment of your choice; if you have a spotting scope, pack it, as well. Please pack a full lunch, which you can leave in your vehicle. I recommend packing liquids and snacks. If it’s sunny on tour day, I recommend wearing a hat in order to protect from the heat of the radiating sunlight. Please note that an Ontario Parks Daily Vehicle Permit is also required for this tour. You must register your vehicle using Ontario Parks’ online registration system.

Accommodations: Clients may choose to book a hotel/motel room the night before or the night after the tour. Trenton and Belleville are good options, with a nice suite of hotels/motels to choose from. Clients are in charge of their own bookings (and selections).

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists after the tour. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes.

Activity rating: 2/5. We will be walking a total of 5-6 km. during today’s tour, including walking from Owen Point to Gull Island (the passage is approx. 300 meters).

Meet-up time and location: 9:00 a.m. at the front entrance to Presqu’ile Park. We will use a washroom facility there, upon arrival.

Duration: 5-6 hours.

Cost: $125 per person (HST-included). I accept payment via e-transfer to eontbird@gmail.com. I also accept mailed cheques sent to Eastern Ontario Birding, 751 Namur Street, Embrun Ontario, K0A 1W0.

Payment due date: Upon registration. Your registration is only secure once payment is received. Please be sure to review my Cancellation Policy ahead of signing up for this tour.
