Carden Alvar IBA

Sat/Sun, June 22/23: Join Eastern Ontario Birding for a peak summertime birding spectacle in the Ontario-renowned Carden Alvar IBA! We will seek to find many different bird species, including Loggerhead Shrike, Sedge Wren, Marsh Wren, Golden-winged Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Vesper Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Wilson’s Snipe, American Woodcock, Common Nighthawk, Eastern Whip-poor-will, Yellow Rail (rare), Black Tern, Forster’s Tern, Sora, American Bittern, Least Bittern and so much more. The beautiful open pastures and grasslands provide lovely backdrops to this special area. I can’t wait to explore it with you.

Day Flow (general): We will meet at noon on Saturday, and bird until dinner hour, then have a group dinner. After dinner, we’ll head out for dusk/early nighttime birding (owls, whip-poor-will, nighthawks, rails etc). On Sunday, we’ll meet in the morning (TBD time…but, I will make sure it’s a reasonable time!) and end the tour approximately 7-8 hours after it begins (the end time will be mid-to-late afternoon).

Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, but the good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I will endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” 🙂

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season, and be sure to take a look at the forecast for the region in which we will be birding a few days out from the tour. Please pack a cooler with the food and drink of your choice, your optical and photographic equipment, as well as your field guides should you wish to consult them during the tour. Please also pack your spotting scope, if you have one, along with some insect repellent and sunscreen, as well.

Accommodations: Each client is responsible for their own hotel/motel/Air BnB/B&B booking. Core areas for booking include Orillia, Gravenhurst and Bracebridge.

Passes & Permits: A permit, costing $10 per person, is required to access the Nonquon Sewage Lagoons (we will visit there on Friday afternoon). Permits are purchased at the Scugog Waste Transfer Station, 1623 Reach Street, Port Perry (we will visit there, before our visit to the lagoons). An electronic version of the Nonquon Sewage Lagoon Birder Permit is available in PDF format at http://www.durham.ca/finance.asp?nr=/departments/finance/financeinside.htm. Payment by cash only at the Scugog Waste Transfer Station.

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists after the tour. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes.

Activity rating: 2/5. We will be walking short distances throughout each day, with each day’s total of walking expected to be 4-5 km.

Meet-up time and location: Meet up on Saturday is at 12:00 p.m. at the Tim Hortons in Port Perry, located at 15930 Old Simcoe Rd, Port Perry, ON L9L 0A2.

Duration: 16-18 hours of birding over a span of two days. A lunch break of 45 min (approx) will be scheduled on both days, as well as snack and washroom breaks.
