Backroad birding in Far-Eastern Ontario

Saturday, April 6: Today, we will search for birds along roadsides, as many birds will be pushed to what little bare ground they can find, after a few days of heavy snowfall. We will search for Horned Larks, Lapland Longspurs, Snow Buntings, sparrows and much more. Quite a few species of geese will be in eastern Ontario at this time. We will look for Greater Snow Geese, Lesser Snow Geese, Ross’s Geese, Canada Geese, Cackling Geese, Greater White-fronted Geese and maybe we’ll even luck out on a very rare goose, such as a Barnacle Goose or a Pink-footed Goose! Incidental sightings of birds of prey and more are possible throughout the tour.

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season and be sure to check on the weather conditions ahead of the tour. Wearing a thermal base layer is a helpful way to stay warm during spring, especially when birding near the water. Please pack your photographical and optical equipment of your choice; if you have a spotting scope, pack it, as well. Please pack a full lunch, which you can leave in your vehicle. I recommend packing liquids and snacks, as well.

Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes during the tour.
