Frontenac Arch Series: Murphys Point Provincial Park

Wednesday, June 5: Today, we will enjoy beautiful Murphys Point Provincial Park and search for Frontenac Arch breeding birds. Some target birds include: Cerulean Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Indigo Bunting, Scarlet Tanager, Eastern Towhee, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Black-billed Cuckoo, Red-shouldered Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Barred Owl and much more! The area in which we will be exploring is filled to the brim with interesting plants, animals fungi and more; we will take in the splendour of the area at every turn throughout the day. Who knows what we may observe.

Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, but the good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I will endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” 🙂

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season, and be sure to take a look at the forecast for the region in which we will be birding a few days out from the tour. Please pack a cooler with the food and drink of your choice, your optical and photographic equipment, as well as your field guides should you wish to consult them during the tour. I recommend wearing long pants and long socks (worn over your pant legs), for protection against potential hitchhiking ticks. Please also pack your spotting scope, if you have one, along with some insect repellent and sunscreen, as well.

Permits & Passes: An Ontario Parks’ Daily Vehicle Permit is required for this tour. You must use Ontario Parks’ online registration system to book. Bookings can be made up to five days out from the day of our visit.

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists after the tour. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes.

Activity rating: 2-3/5. We will be hiking various trails today, walking a total distance of 5-7 km throughout the day.

Meet-up time and location: 8:30 a.m. at Silver Queen Mine Trail parking lot, along Elm Grove Road.

Duration: 6-7 hours total, with a lunch break scheduled in.
