Peak fall migration at Tommy Thompson Park

Saturday, September 7: Today, we will visit one of southern Ontario’s top migration sites in search of a wide variety of bird species, Tommy Thompson Park, in Toronto! Peak numbers of shorebirds, songbirds, hawks, falcons, gulls, terns and more will be passing through Toronto at this time. In addition to large numbers of birds, and a wide variety of species, we may observe rare birds, as well; September and October are famed vagrant/rarity months! There is a well-connected community of birders in Toronto and on a Saturday in September, you can be sure many of them will be out and birding; we will keep our eyes peeled for Rare Bird Alerts in addition to searching for rarities ourselves! Who knows what the day will bring. At minimum, we are bound to have a exciting birding adventure with many memorable moments in the field 🙂

Guarantees: With birds, there are never guarantees, but the good news is you’ll have a professional guide at the helm with many years of experience searching for and identifying birds. As always, I will endeavour to make the most of each tour, and the philosophy I encourage is to “take whatever the day brings.” 🙂

What to pack/What to know: Please dress for the season, and be sure to take a look at the forecast for the region in which we will be birding a few days out from the tour. Please pack a cooler with the food and drink of your choice, your optical and photographic equipment, as well as your field guides should you wish to consult them during the tour. Please pack a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc. I will be bringing a wagon, and we can place our gear in it (scopes, backpacks, etc.); there may not be enough space for all the gear at once, so some of us can alternate between holding our gear, and placing it in the wagon. I will also pack my 35L dry bag, and can take some of your lunches/gear in it.

Permits & Passes: N/A.

eBird Checklists: I will take care of all of the checklists for the day, and share them with you when the tour is complete. Your eBird statistics will automatically update when you accept the checklist. If you are not an eBird user, that is perfectly fine; I will email the checklists after the tour. You’ll be able to browse through the sightings list without having to be an eBird user.

Washrooms: I will schedule a washroom break every 90-120 minutes. There are outhouses at Tommy Thompson Park.

Activity rating: 4/5. We will be on foot and searching here there and everywhere for birds, at Tommy Thompson Park, for the day. Total walking distances will likely be 10-12 km. The terrain is level.
