Amherst Island & Kingston Trip Report

9:30 AM to 5:30 PM

Amherst Island simply does not disappoint! We had more birds of prey than all of us together could shake a stick at. Specifically, we observed 25 Rough-legged Hawks, over 20 Snowy Owls, 11 Red-tailed Hawks, 1 Turkey Vulture, 1 Northern Harrier, 1 Long-eared Owl, and 1 Northern Shrike. The Rough-legged scene was amazing, and we ended up tallying the highest-ever tally of this species during a regularly scheduled EOB tour. Congratulations must go to Karine Scott on her excellent Long-eared Owl find; well-spotted, Karine! We very comfortably birded the island from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM, and could have easily stayed to catch the 6:00 PM ferry. In the end, we tallied 40 species; a good tally, especially given the conditions preceding the outing (northerlies, northerlies, northerlies stagnating spring migration). Thanks for a great weekend, EOB group!
