Lanark County waterbirds

Sunday, November 25: Today, we will be birding the Rideau River in the Smiths Falls area, along with Mississippi Lake and Big Rideau Lake. Participants will be introduced to many new lookouts and locations today! The Lanark Lakes area hosts a great ‘inland’ waterbird scene, where thousands of ducks of all kinds; hundreds upon hundreds of Common Loons; and small numbers of grebes visit and forage before migrating south. Massive numbers of Common Mergansers, small numbers of Red-throated Loons, and even a bona fide Lanark County Barrow’s Goldeneye ‘tick’ for your county list are three possible highlights we may encounter during this tour.

Outing notes: Please be sure to pack snacks, a warm beverage of your choice, some liquids, electrolyte mix, sunscreen, windbreaker, comfortable clothing, comfortable hiking shoes, and so on. Consider a thermal underlayer if it’s going to be chilly. It’s a good idea to pack light gloves, a scarf and a toque at this time of year, as well, as it’s often quite blustery.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner: I am open to organizing a sit-down lunch at the Old Mill at Ashton after the tour.
