Overview, Targets, & Topics: The Richmond Sewage Lagoon is a red-hot spring and fall birding destination. Many species of migrant landbirds use this site as a migration stop over. By now (13 September) warbler diversity has peaked so we’ll be sure to work shrubs, secondary growth, and edge habitat to the bone in search of them. This site is a great one for Orange-crowned Warbler so we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for this species. Catharus thrushes: Hermit, Swainson’s, Gray-cheeked, and Veery are possible here, as are a variety of sparrows. Philadelphia Vireos should also be here, possibly skulking about in mixed species flocks. The sewage ponds traditionally hold an interesting variety of ducks, so we’ll centre them in our scopes (or binoculars) and chat about their identification features (with a special emphasis on females).
