Sparrowhawk is handed a photo and told that both birds were photographed in eastern Ontario. “Both are on our wanted list, Inspector; we need to know approximately when these photographs were taken.” Sparrowhawk is known for her excellent attention to detail and, quickly identifying the birds in the photo (Rose-breasted Grosbeak at top and Pine Warbler at bottom), she turns her attention to the state of the leaves in the attached photos. At top, the leaves are still in a state of growth and show no apparent damage from insects. Sparrowhawk concludes that the photo must then have been taken sometime late in the spring, around approximately mid May, and she’s right; the photo was taken on 17 May 2016! Next, she focuses her attention on the photo below. She notes the advanced state of growth and varied damage from insects, leaving behind a worm, frayed, and freckled appearance to the leaves. Sparrowhawk concludes this particular photo was taken sometime during late summer…and she’s correct; the photo was taken on 14 September 2016!
